When clothing designer Becky Voelkel was growing up, she spent many summers on Cape Cod, visiting her grandparents at their home in Chatham and filling her days with sun, sea and sand. It was there that she launched her clothing line, Mahi Gold, in July of 2008, and hosted her first trunk show out of a tool shed (painted white for the occasion) in her grandparent’s backyard. Her debut collection of cotton dresses adorned with nautical flag prints was an instant hit.

“Cars lined the street and women were trying on dresses in every room of my grandparent’s small Cape house,” says Voelkel, who enjoys reminiscing about the early days of her business. In the years since, the Mahi Gold brand has steadily grown. It now offers stylish attire for women, men and children and sells to customers all across the country, including locally at Mahi Gold Outfitters locations in Chatham, Edgartown, and their most recent addition—Hingham Square.

Becky and her husband Brian Voelkel, a Hanover native who was previously the general manager of the Brockton Rox minor league baseball team, moved to Hingham three years ago to be closer to family. The couple fell in love with the community and soon realized how much the Mahi Gold brand aligned with the South Shore lifestyle. “We are best known for our dresses, which are designed to work for whatever the warm weather brings your way, whether you’re heading to the office or the beach, a bridal shower or even a casual summer wedding,” says Voelkel. “One of the key features of our dresses is that they wash and wear so well and they pack easily so there’s no need to iron.” There are dress styles that cater to women of every age, body shape and personality, from bright, colorful prints to more classic designs, and everything is made in the U.S.A.

The new Mahi Gold Outfitters location in Hingham officially opened in December of 2020. The boutique is bright and beautiful, with racks filled with their colorful signature designs. In addition, the new store encompass a wide range of casual sportwear for men, including brands like Peter Millar and Faherty. By the fall, the couple plans to be offering high-quality children’s clothing as well, such as Patagonia Kids. The couple are happy to be raising their own three children, ages 5, 2.5 and 8 months, here on the South Shore, and are looking forward to their first summer in Hingham Square.
