Working remotely certainly has its perks, but when your office space is a kitchen table it can end up being distracting and socially isolating. Such was the case for Marshfield resident Rachael Meyers, who upon having children decided to leave her corporate job as an art director at UNICEF USA to focus more on her family and her boutique graphic design business. It wasn’t long, however, before Meyers found herself yearning for an office space outside her home where she could focus and have a sense of community. After meeting countless other women on the South Shore who were in similar situations, Meyers set out to create The Collective Co., a unique coworking business designed to inspire, connect and empower local women.

The Collective Co. welcomed its first members in the spring of 2021, but Meyers was laying the groundwork for her business long before the doors were open. While most of the world was stuck at home during the COVID-19 shutdown, Meyers was busy growing a virtual community of like-minded business women by producing the Collective Co. Podcast. Each episode features interviews with successful local entrepreneurs who share their recipe for success.

Situated in a sunny corner office space in the heart of North Scituate Village, The Collective Co. occupies a space that previously housed a Hingham Savings Bank. Inside, members work at stylish desks and tables and can make use of the onsite kitchen or schedule a meeting inside the “Vault” conference room (once a bank vault). “I worked really hard to create an atmosphere where women would feel comfortable from a physical standpoint,” says Meyers, who notes that the air temperature is never too cold or too hot.

“We have members at various stages of life and career,” says Meyers. “Some have corporate jobs or work at non-profit organizations, while others are small business owners, bloggers, or women with a side-hustle. We even have a couple members who just wanted a space outside of their home to read a book or check their email.” In addition to office space, The Collective Co. helps bring its members together by hosting special workshops and events. For Meyers, creating this community is what it’s all about.
