Strawberry Thanksgiving

June 22 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Celebrate Strawberry Thanksgiving at the Historic Patuxet Homesite. This special event will feature programming and educational opportunities across the Museum for guests of all ages to enjoy!

Wuttáhimneash is the Wampanoag word for strawberry, the first berry of the season. Indigenous communities often celebrate this as the beginning of Summer and the coming of the planting/growing season. Strawberry Thanksgiving is a time to be outside and enjoy time with friends and family.

From time immemorial, the Indigenous people of the Northeast have held ceremonies to give thanks in the early spring for the hope of a good growing season, and in the fall, for a successful harvest. Indigenous people celebrated many different days of thanksgiving, including Strawberry Thanksgiving.

This month we’re celebrating the wild strawberry! Native to North America, the strawberry is significant to many Indigenous communities–who also call the strawberry the “heart berry” or “berry of the heart” due to how it looks–as it symbolizes the start of summer.

Access to all Strawberry Thanksgiving events are included with admission to Plimoth Patuxet Museums.
