Bright Morning Stars

Choral Art Society of the South Shore (CAS) presents “Bright Morning Stars.”
Performing in the majestic, historic space of First Parish Duxbury, “Bright Morning Stars”, is inspired by the chorale (hymn) tune heard in BWV1, Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How Brightly Shines the Morning Star). The chorus will perform the first and last movements of that work, where this tune is prominent. This melody is quoted in a Mendelssohn work, “Behold, A Star from Jacob Shining,” also on the program.

Another setting of the text (bright morning stars) will be heard in contemporary composer Shawn Kirchner’s, “Brightest and Best are the Stars of the Morning”, based on a hymn tune with a distinctly American sound of Appalachia, that comes from the 1835 hymnal, Southern Harmony.

In addition to these uplifting, gorgeous pieces, we will sing everything from Vince Guaraldi’s beloved “Christmas Time is Here”, to “Carol of the Bells”, to pieces in Hawaiian and Swedish. We also offer an amusing and heartwarming piece on that timeless, cozy feeling of sitting beside each other, staring at our cellphones in that special holiday way – “I Want to Stare at My Phone with You” (A Millennial Holiday Song).
