Speak for Thyself Awards Celebrate Outstanding Women

The 16th annual Speak for Thyself Awards will recognize four outstanding community leaders two with Duxbury roots, who, in the spirit of Mayflower Passenger Priscilla Mullins Alden, have promoted extraordinary outcomes by speaking on behalf of themselves and others. The awards dinner will be held on May 11 at the Jones River Trading Post in Kingston.
Sponsored by the Alden Kindred of America, this year’s awards will honor Duxbury native Donna Wood, who built one of the most successful real estate agencies in Duxbury and is currently serving as president of the Duxbury Rural and Historic Society.
Kay Drake is also well-known to the Duxbury community for her more than 20 years of devoted service as outreach coordinator for the Duxbury Interfaith Council. She is a recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to building a stronger nation through volunteer service.
Jennifer Stone Gaines grew the Woods Hole Historical Museum on Cape Cod from a subcommittee of the local library into a campus of several buildings housing exhibit, workshop, and archival space, as well as becoming the publisher of the award-winning “Spritsail,” a peer-reviewed journal focusing on the history of Cape Cod.
Alabama native Pamela Nichols of Birmingham followed a successful 30-year career in healthcare and turned her energy to advocating for veterans. She co-founded the Honor Flight Birmingham (HFB) hub, which serves veterans in the Birmingham area by flying them to be honored in the nation’s capital.
Duxbury High School senior Grace Nightingale, an outstanding student-athlete and singer with a passion for the preserving the environment and helping helping disabled students learn to ski, will be honored as the “Aspiring Priscilla.”
