For Christina Godfrey, the director of the newly opened Savage Godfrey Gallery in Norwell, art is more than just a passion—it’s a family legacy. The daughter of abstract expressionist painter Robert S. Neuman and gallerist Sunne Savage (who founded the Sunne Savage Gallery in Boston in 1975), Godfrey was surrounded by art from a young age. After graduating from Wheaton College with an art degree, she went on to join the family business and worked alongside her mother for two decades, honing her expertise in art sales, collection management, and curation. Now at the helm of the multi-generational woman-owned business, Godfrey made the decision to officially rebrand the gallery and relocate it to the South Shore in 2024, ushering in a new era of artistic engagement.

“Savage Godfrey Gallery is an evolution of what my mother built,” says Godfrey. “We remain committed to fine art sales, collection management, and custom commissions, but with a renewed focus on emerging and mid-career regional artists.”

Exhibitions run every 8-12 weeks and highlight a range of artistic styles from abstract to transitional, often drawing inspiration from nature. Godfrey and her team also provide expert services, including framing, conservation, appraisals, and private commissions. The gallery’s clientele includes prestigious institutions such as Amundi, Lendlease, RSM, and Boston Children’s Hospital, as well as local interior designers and private collectors. While Savage is now primarily focused on promoting the works of her late husband, she continues to play an advisory role in the business, bringing her decades of experience in fine art sales and curation to the table.

Looking to the future, Godfrey envisions the gallery serving as a cultural hub for the South Shore art community. “Art has the power to transform spaces and spark conversation,” she says. “My goal is to foster connections—not just between artists and collectors, but within the creative community as a whole.”

Looking Ahead:
“Unique Perspectives”

The Savage Godfrey Gallery’s newest exhibition, “Unique Perspectives,” will run from March 19 through May 2 and will showcase distinct and powerful works by three regional artists: Carole Bolsey of Kingston, Gints Grinbergs of Dedham, and Kelly Russo of Scituate. The show will highlight each artist’s unique approach to their craft. Bolsey’s large-scale paintings explore the timeless forms of boats and barns, evoking a sense of place and history. Grinbergs is a sculptor who repurposes cast-off steel into stunning botanical and geometric sculptures. Russo’s vibrant, abstract paintings capture the movement and energy of everyday life, offering a colorful nod to the changing seasons. A reception for Unique Perspectives will be held on Friday, March 21, from 6-8 p.m. The Savage Godfrey Gallery, located at 693 Main Street in Norwell, is located next to Coastal Chic Interiors. Gallery hours are Tuesdays 12-4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday
10 a.m.-4 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, visit savagegodfrey.com.
