Kingston resident Paula Hoss has always been interested in health and wellness but it wasn’t until she became a mother and began reading the labels on her skincare products that she had a wake-up call. One hot day in 2014, Hoss was getting ready to take her 2-month-old daughter outside for a walk. Without thinking twice, she sprayed her skin liberally with a common drugstore sunscreen before heading out the door.
“I picked up my daughter Juniper, who was teething at the time, and placed her on my shoulder,” says Hoss. “I immediately felt her gums latch onto my skin and it dawned on me that she was ingesting all of the chemicals that I had just sprayed on myself.” This realization inspired Hoss to seek out natural alternatives to chemically-enhanced skincare products. Unfortunately, while many brands claimed to be natural, many still contained an abundance of questionable ingredients. Unwilling to settle, Hoss began researching and making batches of her own skincare products at home, using all-natural ingredients.
Fast forward to today and Hoss has turned her passion project into a thriving beauty business. CLN&DRTY Natural Skincare offers an assortment of products specifically designed for different skin types. From facial cleansers, toners and moisturizers to eye creams, mud masks and blemish sticks, there’s something for everyone. No longer cooking up skincare in her kitchen, Hoss works with a trusted formulator to manufacture products that are both safe and effective for various skincare concerns. “We check every single ingredient against the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database to ensure that they are safe,” says Hoss, who encourages everyone to look up the ingredients in their own personal care products.
Over time, CLN&DRTY has developed a community of devoted customers who report positive skin experiences after using the products and who care deeply about overall health and wellness. “Self-care is not selfish,” says Hoss, who is also an advocate for mental health and substance abuse recovery. Looking to the future, Hoss hopes to continue to expand the reach of the CLN&DRTY brand and inspire even more people to feel confident in their skin.
Paula’s Morning Routine and Skincare Secrets
8 p.m. The most important part of my morning routine starts the night before. I make sure my kitchen is clean and ready to catch the chaos of the morning and all of my clothes are laid out for the next day. My evening skincare routine has recently been CLN&DRTY’s Be Clear Regimen and I’ve found that it really leaves my skin glowing in the morning.
5:45 a.m. My alarm goes off and I generally snooze it for about 15-20 minutes.
6:10 a.m. I brush my teeth, spray on CLN&DRTY’s Rosewater Facial Mist to balance the pH of my skin and put on the workout clothes that I laid out the night before.
6:20 a.m. I make myself a cup of coffee and sit down to write my daily to-do list. By this time, my two daughters (ages 4 and 7) are awake and my husband and I tag team making them breakfast. Sometimes this is a calm time and sometimes it’s chaos. If you have kids, then you totally know what I’m talking about.
6:30 a.m. I pull out my journal and begin on my morning pages. These look very similar every day: 3 new things I’m grateful for, 3 things that I’m praying for, 3 priorities for the day and 10 affirmations. I then take out my Bible and read, highlight and take notes on one chapter.
7 a.m. My husband takes the girls to school and I head upstairs to our guest bedroom to work out. I’ve recently been using the Peloton app because the videos are so motivating and there is a huge variety.
7:45 a.m. After my workout, I sit on the futon in our guest bedroom, put on my headphones and either do a guided meditation on YouTube or meditate to calming music for 10-20 minutes. I honestly used to roll my eyes at meditation, but when I realized that it’s practice for calming down during stressful moments in my life, it really started clicking.
8 a.m. I jump in the shower and wash my face with CLN&DRTY CLN Wash. After I shower, I use CLN&DRTY C Serum, moisturize with Organic R&A Oil and use an SPF (I like Supergoop!’s Unseen Sunscreen).
8:30 a.m. I follow a simple makeup routine of concealer, foundation, bronzer, blush and mascara, which that is quick to apply but helps me feel a little more put together and camera-ready, in case I happen to go live on Instagram that day.
9 a.m. Lastly, I’m off to the office for a morning meeting with my team and a quick breakfast at my desk.
