Overlooking the entrance to Plymouth Bay, Gurnet Light (also known as Plymouth Light) is an iconic South Shore landmark. The historic lighthouse can be somewhat tricky to photograph, since private road access is restricted to residents and requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Marshfield resident Spencer Morecroft has been fortunate to visit the lighthouse on several occasions. Most recently, he was able to capture a dramatic image of the lighthouse bathed in colors from the northern lights.

“I have friends who have property on Saquish and every time we would go out, the lighthouse would be my favorite subject to photograph,” says Morecroft. “On this day, I saw the northern lights from my home and I knew that is where I needed to head.”

A self-taught photographer with a love for the ocean, waves and surfing, Morecroft has honed his skills over the years through a lot of trial and error. He enjoys experimenting with his art, and making memories in the process. “Taking this photo was a surreal moment—something I never thought I’d experience,” says Morecroft. “Sitting with my girlfriend under the glowing sky was the most incredible experience of my life. I’m grateful for that night, and this photo will always be a reminder of what we experienced.” Follow more of Spencer Morecroft’s photography adventures on Instagram @spennward.
